LTE radio network

Sprint has completed an investment project for Kujawsko-Pomorska Sieć Informacyjna Sp. z o.o. (K-PSI) for "Construction of broadband radio access network infrastructure with accompanying infrastructure for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship". The order was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Regional Operational Programme for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship for the period between 2007-2013.

The project involved the design and construction of 38 base stations (BTS) of the LTE system throughout  Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. 4 BTS stations were located on the existing high points - on the roofs of buildings in Toruń, Bydgoszcz and Świecie (together with a 16 meters high steel lattice mast) and on the chimney of the heat and power plant in Inowrocław. For the needs of establishing the remaining base stations, 34 pre-stressed concrete towers 46 meters high were designed and constructed, along with the infrastructure and 16 telecommunication containers with the equipment (power connections, telecommunication power plants with battery banks, air-conditioning, heating, alarm systems, BMS remote supervision systems), 25 outdoor telecommunication cabinets equipped with telecommunication power plants with battery banks and BMS remote supervision systems. In total, 142 sectors of LTE base stations were installed and launched by Sprint. In total, 45 telecommunication facilities were built or upgraded throughout Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.


The constructed base stations of the LTE system were connected to backbone nodes of the regional K-PSI network, using optical fiber connections or radio links made with the use of operator-class radio links operating in licensed bands. The project involved construction of fiber optic connections in 13 locations, with a total length of 27.5 km, made using microduct technology and traditional fiber optic cables in teletechnical ducts.


During the project, Sprint installed 25 radio links with speeds ranging from 150 Mbps to 400 Mbps full-duplex (FDD mode) to connect base stations to the K-PSI network. In addition, 14 wireless radiolinks above 200 Mbps were installed and put into operation to connect 14 hospitals to the regional K-PSI network.


The project involved renovation and modernization of rooms for the purposes of building a network management and monitoring center - the CPD server room and battery room in the K-PSI building in Toruń. The CPD server room was equipped with a UPS system with battery banks, air-conditioning and ventilation system, fire alarm system, gas extinguishing system, access control system, CCTV monitoring, intrusion alarm system, BMS monitoring system, server cabinets, patch panels, server room structural cabling system (fibre optic and copper), main switchgear of the power supply system with the SZR. The server room was powered from two independent power connections. In the server room, Sprint installed and launched a central access network management system NMS (CORE LTE) and radio transport network management system.


In addition, the project delivered to K-PSI edge routers for BGP interconnection upgrade in K-PSI network, passive CWDM transmission equipment for fiber connection upgrade in 3 relations, 3 Blade servers and disk array, virtualization software, system software and multi-user software. Sprint delivered 1,500 CPEs to K-PSI. CPE - subscriber terminals for LTE system and 75 Hot-Spot devices.

The result of the project is a broadband network built in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in the LTE standard, which provides public administration units, institutions subordinate to local governments, businesses from the region, and residents in areas at risk of digital exclusion with access to broadband Internet, the possibility to use ICT services and multimedia information resources and services provided electronically by K-PSI.
