ITS for Tarnów
The implementation of the investment involved the design and carrying out construction works as well as the delivery, realisation, commissioning and implementation of the Intelligent Transport System of the city of Tarnów (ITS System) infrastructure. Already in 2018, the Tarnów City Bicycle was launched and the first boards of the Dynamic Passenger Information System began to function, communicating the up-to-the-minute bus departure times from individual bus stops.
More than a year and a half of work resulted in:
TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTER
The project involved adapting rooms to create a Traffic Control Center in the Municipal Police building in Tarnów, where the Traffic Safety and Management Center was located. The Traffic Control Center is responsible for monitoring intersections, monitoring and switching on/off priority for public transport at individual intersections, and cooperating with the Police.
SERVER ROOM
As part of the server room extension, IT hardware and software were delivered and launched, creating a professional data center capable of gathering and processing a vast amount of data collected from all ITS subsystems.
CENTRAL TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM
In this area, we have provided software that dynamically monitors the operation of intersections with traffic lights. The system assesses congestion at intersections on a city-wide scale and adjusts the length of traffic light cycles and phases on this basis. It also maintains the so-called coordination of subsequent intersections so that drivers can pass through the city as smoothly as possible.
INTERSECTIONS MONITORING
The intersections included in the ITS system have been equipped with digital rotating cameras which record the images from the intersections and enable quick reaction of the operators in case of emergency or congestion. The recordings from the CCTV monitoring system also provide evidence for the Police.
TRAFFIC VOLUME MEASUREMENT AND CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
The solution that was launched here enables automatic traffic measurement at each intersection, as well as calculation of average travel time on particular road sections. Such information allows further planning of traffic solutions in the city using micro- and macro-simulation software, which also allows information about the fastest travel routes to be displayed on variable message signs (VMS)
System of Dynamic Information at Stops
Thanks to the cooperation of the previously launched System of Dynamic Information at Stops (pol. SDIP), on-board computers installed in buses, and the Traffic Control System, the so-called "priority of city transport vehicles" has been initiated. A bus that is behind schedule can receive the green light at subsequent intersections. The delivered software enables operators to make independent decisions on how to assign priorities to buses.
PARKING INFORMATION
Parking information system was launched to measure the availability of 600 parking spaces in 22 parking lots in the city center. For this purpose, a dual-system sensor has been installed in the ground at each parking space to detect every vehicle entry and exit. In the mobile phone app for Android and IOS, you can additionally map your route to the unoccupied parking space of your choice.
WEATHER STATIONS
Weather stations have been installed in three areas of Tarnów to improve road safety. They provide automatic information about possible icing. The stations can measure air pollution and wind strength. All collected information is stored in a central database and some of it can be displayed on a web portal, in a mobile application or as a warning.
INFORMATION BOARDS
Variable Message Signs (VMS) have been placed at three inlets to Tarnów. Their primary function is to inform drivers about the best alternative routes, based on the measured average travel times on road sections.
PLATFORM
For the systems and subsystems described above to exchange information with each other, a platform integrating all of them has been provided. Thanks to it, the operators have current information in one place on the operating status of all devices connected to the ITS system, so that in emergency situations they can make fast decisions. Moreover, the platform makes it possible to extend the system with new functionalities.
